BE-U | Behrens-Ufer is a Berlin beacon project that sets new urban planning, technological and energy standards: In the southeast of the capital, a future-oriented, energy self-sufficient urban quarter for business, science, art, culture and public life is being built on 10 hectares of land. The vision is centred on people and their needs.

The location of BE-U is exceptional: it is situated in the middle of the high-growth investment corridor of Berlin South-East between Alexanderplatz and BER Airport, in Berlin’s largest district Treptow-Köpenick, which is rich in forests and water.

What does the future of our city look like?
With the BerlinStrategie 2030, the Senate is setting the development framework for all areas of cohabitation in the next decade. Sustainable solutions for businesses are to be created in the city to drive healthy and sustainable economic growth that creates jobs. More space for nature and increasing quality of life with plenty of culture, leisure and sports opportunities are further themes. The BE-U joins this strategy as a driving force and implements these ideas on the entire site.
Self-sufficient energy toward the goal: sustainable and fit for the future
The BE-U’s energy supply is based on an integrated, largely self-sufficient concept for the entire neighbourhood. This is based on locally used renewable energy sources and should be able to generate more energy in the future than the neighbourhood itself needs. For the provision of green, neighbourhood-generated energy, the use of deep geothermal energy, solar energy (PV/PVT) and hydropower, the thermal use of the Spree River as well as innovative recycling and storage systems are being examined. Low-voltage grids are being installed throughout the site. This not only enables direct use of PV electricity without conversion, but also reduces the overall electricity demand.
An energy supply network of the latest generation – a cold local heating network – ensures a sustainable distribution of energy sources. It is also the future main reservoir of the neighbourhood. Surplus energy can thus be stored in the form of heat or cold and used later or fed into the public grid.
Participation and information
The concept involves residents and visitors from the very beginning, and an information centre with a variety of uses will be created for them at BE-U by the beginning of 2023. In addition to a detailed insight into the future of the Behrens-Ufer, the neighbourhood management will offer events such as information evenings, working groups and workshops here in the future. Innovative and participatory concepts for education, gastronomy, culture, events, health and leisure are being developed on the site.
